European Commission aims to give EUROPOL new powers
Europe

The European Commission has unveiled proposals to strengthen the powers of Europol as part of a wider effort to improve the European Union's ability to tackle terrorism, organised crime and emerging digital threats.

The plans recognise that criminal and terrorist networks are increasingly operating across borders, using encrypted communications, artificial intelligence, cryptocurrencies and online platforms to coordinate activities and evade law enforcement.

Under the proposals, Europol would receive enhanced capabilities to support national police forces through improved intelligence sharing, stronger analytical tools and greater access to digital evidence. The agency would also play a larger role in coordinating cross-border investigations and identifying links between criminal and terrorist networks operating in different member states.

The Commission believes the changes will enable faster responses to evolving security threats while improving cooperation between EU countries and international partners. The proposals also place a strong emphasis on combating cyber-enabled crime, terrorist financing and online radicalisation, reflecting the changing nature of the threat landscape.

If approved by the European Parliament and member states, the reforms would represent one of the most significant expansions of Europol's operational support role in recent years, helping to ensure Europe's law enforcement agencies remain equipped to counter increasingly sophisticated terrorist and criminal organisations.
